It’s much more than an attempt at humour.

Here’s what John Cena’s “naked act” at the Oscars actually means

Waking up to images of a naked John Cena on social media was an unexpected way to start my Monday morning. The wrestling superstar made an unexpected appearance at the Oscars sporting (only) a pair of Birkenstocks and an envelope to shield his modesty as he presented the award for Best Costume Design. While the move was initially met with loud bursts of laughter, it soon became apparent that Cena's skit meant more than just a bid for laughs.

Host Jimmy Kimmel set the stage with his banter, playfully musing, "Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today?" Cena, lurking behind the curtain, seized the opportunity, poking his head out to quip, "I changed my mind, I don’t want to do the streaker bit." But when Kimmel reminded him that it was all in jest, Cena responded with, "The male body is not a joke."

Indeed, Cena's naked presentation wasn't merely comedic; it was a clever commentary on the importance and prioritisation of costume designers in the film industry. Whenever a movie project struggles with a small budget, the cost for the wardrobe department is usually one of the first corners to be cut or minimised. But people often forget that the costumes in a film aren’t just about aesthetics; they can literally make or break a movie. Just glance at Poor Things and you'll know what we mean.

By awkwardly but boldly appearing in his “birth suit,” Cena honoured the creative designers who work behind the scenes to create bold looks that add to the depth of the characters and their plots. Their contributions are sometimes, unfortunately, overshadowed by the more visible aspects of filmmaking.

The audience roared with laughter and applause to Cena's skit, just as I did. But I also couldn't help but wonder if the audience and viewers would have the same reaction had the roles been reversed. It's definitely something to think about.
