Cosmo: What's your first memory of connecting with music?
Lisa Mishra: "My first memory of connecting with music was singing 'Jaadu Hai Tera Yeh Jaadu' from Gulaam over the phone to my aunt, at age four. It was also the first time my parents realised that I could sing!"
Cosmo:
During this chaotic period, what urged you to perform digital concerts on social media?LM: "I have always done Instagram and YouTube covers, and that was anyways my origin story in music. So this is a pretty natural and familiar territory for me to perform in."
Cosmo: Who are your all-time favourite musicians?
LM: "I have multiple sources of inspiration. I was born in India during the era of Rahman, and my teens were ruled by SEL and Vishal-Shekhar. On the other hand, once I moved to the United States Of America, I was listening primarily to American r&b artists like Destiny’s Child and Ashanti. These will always be the go-to artists for me."
Cosmo: Who inspired you to make music?
LM: "Probably AR Rahman. Taal was the soundtrack of my youth and is to this day, my most played album."
Cosmo: What is it like performing a digital concert vis-à-vis a live concert in a particular location?
LM: "Digital concerts are fun because you get to read your audiences requests and reactions while playing, so it ironically ends up being more personal than playing a live show. Although, live shows have an electricity because of the crowd’s energy."
Cosmo: Tell us a little about the power of music to heal.
LM: "Music has been an age-old healer. It has for thousands of years defined eras of human hardships- songs of war, defeat, triumph, will, power, etc. Music is a different kind of medicine."
Cosmo: What have you been doing to keep yourself busy these days?
LM: "I have been binge-watching crime shows and films. My favourites are 'She' on Netflix and 'The Family Man' on Amazon Prime."
Cosmo: What song are you listening to on repeat right now?
LM: "I’m listening to 'In the Waiting Line' by Zero 7. They’re such a mellow sound and have been around for ages. I listen to their music both for the nostalgic value, as well as because it relaxes me."
Cosmo: Are you finding yourself more or less creative in isolation?
LM: "I find myself less creative in isolation. I’m a group brainstormer and love ideating with others. This will be a tough one for me to crack!"
Cosmo: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be and why?
LM: "I would love to collaborate with Charlie Puth or John Mayer. I’ve been obsessively watching their performance videos on Instagram. They are true legends!"
