Who is Ambika Mod and why is the internet suddenly talking about her?

Netflix recently released a new series called One Day—based on the 2009 David Nicholls novel of the same name—and we’re in love with it!

Adding to the allure of the series is a new face, Ambika Mod—a British actor of Indian descent, who is taking the world by storm with her portrayal of the relatable and endearing, Emma Morley.

The 29-year-old actress, comedian, and writer has already made a mark with her impressive performance in the 2022 miniseries This Is Going to Hurt, and One Day further solidifies her potential as a rising star on the acting scene.

Born in Hertfordshire, England to Indian immigrant parents, Mod's passion for acting and comedy emerged early on in her school years. Following an English degree, she ventured into stand-up comedy and landed small TV roles including appearances on The Mash Report. Her turning point was the award-winning role of Shruti Acharya in the critically acclaimed AMC dark comedy-drama This Is Going to Hurt

While Mod cherishes the One Day novel (having first devoured it at 13), she felt that becoming Emma Morley almost wasn't meant to be. Having experienced imposter syndrome, Mod spoke about having initially declined the audition opportunity, daunted by the pressure of portraying a cherished character from her favourite book.

Mod's powerful performance transcends simply reimagining Emma Morley. She shared that both Morley and Dexter Mayhew (the male protagonist) were cast "regardless of ethnicity," opening up a new dimension for the two characters. She believes this decision resonates deeply with the story and enriches Mod's identity. More importantly, she hopes it can open minds and inspire people to have conversations about young South Asian women in the industry, providing them with the recognition they deserve.

So what’s next for her?

After her successful stint on One Day, Mod is all set to star in the upcoming five-part Disney+ thriller, Playdate. Beyond that, details about her future projects are officially unknown. However, given her talent, ambition, and growing fanbase, there are endless possibilities on the horizon for this rising star!
