Kate Middleton is well-known for it. So is Kareena Kapoor Khan and now, even Ivanka Trump repeated an outfit.
It's 2020 and sustainable fashion is more than a buzz word now. Issa lifestyle. Part of it is curbing reckless fashion shopping sprees and getting more out of the clothes that you already own. But, that is easier said than done. So, we spoke to self-confessed clothes repeater and celebrity stylist Aastha Sharma on how to prep your closet for a sustainable lifestyle.
"I regularly repeat my clothes and I love doing that because if I bought something it is because I loved it and don’t want it to go waste. So, I try to invest as much as I can into clothes that I can wear again and again. I just style it differently each time. You can make it grungey or sexy just by changing accessories, hair or makeup. This can completely change around an outfit without much effort," she says.
Here are her suggestions to repeat your common wardrobe staples:
Lehengas
"Get creative. Most of the times, the blouse of your lehenga can be worn with a sari, the lehenga can itself be paired with a white shirt, t-shirt or you can just change the whole look of the ensemble with different separates. I recently got myself a lehenga with a hip-length long choli made from 'itr'. I wanted to wear it again and again, so, I got the lehenga in a light colour in case I needed to wear it with a different top. I would suggest not opting for a heavy outfit that you just cannot wear again."
Maxi Dresses
"You can keep repeating your maxi dresses. Wear them as is or grunge it up with a pair of leather boots, leather belt or jacket. You can also keep it sexy by wearing it with stilletos and a pair of earrings and bold lip colour."
Jackets
"Some of your separates such as cool jackets are great for changing the look and vibe of an outfit. Pair a jacket with different outfits such as dress, shorts…I think I really like to concentrate on jackets to repeat outfits."
Kaftans
"So, you can wear kaftans with Indian jewellery for a wedding with a choker and chandbalis to transform and make it look really different from when you wear it at the beach with contemporary, minimal jewellery, hair and makeup."
Saris
"Pre-stitched saris are excellent to re-wear. There are some with embellished and jacket blouses. Each piece can be worn to a different occasion. So, with the jacket sari, you remove the sari and just wear it as a dress for a party. Then you can wear the sari for a wedding with traditional Indian jewellery. Each piece can be styled in 2-3 different ways and you can wear them with boots, stilettos and as dresses, you can even wear them with sneakers."
