Here's what my cat taught me about boundaries

Let’s be honest for a moment—how many times have you allowed yourself to be treated like a doormat? We’ve all been there. No judgement here—I've personally strolled down that well-worn path of self-sacrifice until my cat intervened. Yes, my cat.

One lazy Sunday afternoon, I dared to interrupt her beauty sleep, and what did I get in return? A hiss, a swat, and the most piercing green eyes gave me a clear message: stay away. At that moment, this tiny, unapologetic creature taught me the importance of setting boundaries—something I had completely neglected for far too long. If she could defend her personal space so fiercely, why couldn’t I? That’s when I decided to start setting boundaries in my own life. Let me show you how Boomer (my beautiful feline fluff) and I established our own rules for a balanced, affectionate dynamic—and trust me, these lessons are just as relevant for the people in your life!

Express your disapproval

I’m all for compromising with loved ones—happy to suffer through a burger night (even though I’d rather gnaw on cardboard) just to keep my brother company. But there’s a big, bright neon line that gets crossed when someone tries to force my hand. That’s when the velvet glove comes off, and the iron fist makes an appearance. Case in point: burgers? Fine. Forced tequila shots? Absolutely not. There’s a BIG difference between a friendly compromise and a full-blown violation of personal space. And honey, I’m no longer accepting reservations for the latter.

Take some me-time

My cat’s a cuddle Houdini. One minute we’re snuggling, the next she’s vanished, curled up in some cosy corner, leaving me feeling utterly rejected. But I’ve figured: with cats, affection and boundaries go hand in hand. It’s one of the purest forms of love. People who “get” dogs but not cats? They probably struggle with the word “no.” You can’t force affection, darling. It’s about respecting someone’s need for space. And my cat has taught me that lesson ever so beautifully. I’ve learned to turn down plans when my social battery is drained. No point in showing up just to be a zombie. I’d rather give people my full attention and energy—it’s fairer to everyone, including me.

It’s all about respect

My cat? A tiny, furry enforcer of respect. Cross her, and those claws come out. Yell? Prepare for the icy silence. These creatures don’t mince ‘meows’ either when displeased. Any hint of dominance—a pointed finger, an air of superiority—is met with swift feline justice. Go, cats! I’ve taken a page from their rulebook. Be nice to me, and I’ll be your biggest fan. Disrespect me? You’ll get a taste of your own medicine. Respect is non-negotiable and the bare minimum for any interaction. Everyone deserves it.

Cut off any negativity

Spiritual wisdom suggests cats are tiny, purring vacuum cleaners for bad vibes. They absorb negativity like furry little sponges. I’ve taken inspiration and crafted my own aura-cleansing method: “the cut-off.” It’s simple, really. Cut off the energy vampires sucking you dry. Cut off toxic environments that chip away at your sanity. Cut off anything that disrupts your inner peace. Then, recharge, meditate, chant affirmations, smudge with sage, pray—whatever floats your spiritual boat. Because darling, protecting your peace is a must. It’s not selfish; it’s self-preservation.

Black cat energy only

Everybody in love, this one’s for you (especially my girlies!): Let your partner bring the retriever energy while you embody the poised black cat. Cats don’t chase; they attract. If someone’s dragging you down, simply 'cat-walk' away. Pour that energy into self-improvement; let your aura do the talking. Cats are so independent, we humans can’t resist their rizz. Love and be loved on your terms. When you prioritise yourself and radiate confidence, the right love will find you.

Let’s all embrace more feline energy, shall we? Be more direct in all our conversations and unapologetically protect our needs.
