This is the first step. Many make a mistake of not noting down the area of their space and at times end up buying furniture that may not fit in their living room. “Taking accurate on-site floor plan measurements is a fool-proof way of checking if your desired furniture will find a home in your space. Moreover, taking dimensions of the doorway clearance will help you analyse if a ready-made piece of furniture will even be able to go through it!” Advises Anupriya.
The most commonly used furniture item must be placed in your space first. Not only will it make the space usable and welcoming, but it will also act as an anchor and starting point for design decisions, colours and textures. “For example, a solid wood dining table in a bare living room will help smaller furniture build a narrative around it,” suggests Anupriya.
It is good to consider furniture as an investment and indulge in select pieces that will last long. Moreover, good quality furniture is a visible indicator of well-curated design and will contribute to the visual appeal of the space.
Design is subjective, and the personality of your space depends on your design preferences. Therefore, use different pieces of furniture to create a personalised space. “When curating furniture, a fundamental rule is to follow an architectural style, such as modern or rustic. For example, modern and contemporary furniture has sleek, clean design lines and usually comprises white, beige, or neutral colours. Glass, metal, and shiny black reflective materials are used more often than traditional wood tones,” explains Anurpiya.
A space has added charm when accessorised with soft furnishings, plants and unique design elements. Rugs, vases of different heights and ceiling lights are some highlights that can elevate a space with well-sourced furniture. In addition, furniture that compliments each other portrays a refined and calming visual.
