8 Foods that could Make Your Period Cramps Worse

Do the cramps hit you every month right before you start menstruating and stubbornly stay put for the first few days of your cycle? Well, you aren’t alone. Period pain can cause a lot of discomfort. But did you know an improper diet can result in pain, headache, nausea, diarrhea among many other symptoms of menstruation. We asked Lovneet Batra, clinical nutritionist and author to share a list of foods that could worsen the pain. Read on to find out what you need to avoid and say hello to pain-free periods!
“These foods (given below) that can increase bloating indigestion and lead to worse pain,” says Lovneet.

1. Foods high in Salt
Foods high in salt, can cause more bloating and cramping. Avoid processed and packaged foods.

2. Beans
Normally healthy and rich in fiber and vitamins, beans can upset your stomach during your period. It’s better to avoid eating beans or peas during your period and opt for lighter foods instead.

3. Sugar
It’s OK to have 1-2 tsp organic sugar in a day, but eating too much of it can cause a spike in energy followed by a crash.

4. Milk
Milk is generally considered to be a healthy food. However, during your period, your body is particularly susceptible to inflammation. Dairy products can trigger inflammation, which can worsen your menstrual pain.


5. Caffeine
Caffeine can cause water retention and bloating. But caffeine withdrawal can cause headaches, too, so don’t cut out coffee completely if you’re used to having a few cups a day.


6. Organ meats
During your period, your body produces prostaglandins. These compounds help your uterus contract and get rid of the uterine lining, resulting in your menstrual flow. However, high levels of prostaglandins cause cramps. Organ meats may be high in iron, but it is also high in prostaglandins and should be avoided during menstruation.

7. Carbonated drinks can cause a ton of bloating and can make cramps more intense.


8. Foods which create gas for an individual. It can vary from person to person like cauliflower, leafy vegetables.
