Since the pandemic broke out, we have been spending most of our time at our homes. In times like these, any outdoor space gives us an opportunity to connect with nature and refresh and rejuvenate ourselves. If you have a balcony at home, there are chances that you spend a chunk of your time there. And what if we told you that you could give your space an Instagram-worthy makeover? We asked Rakhee Bedi Kumar, Founding Principal, Rakhee Shobhit Design Associates, a multidisciplinary design firm delivering architecture, interior design and strategic services across India to share easy tips to give your balcony a facelift.
Light it up
The decor of the space can be positively amplified through lighting. Simple string lights or lanterns that are easy to install and affordable can uplift the balcony or terrace space, making for an ideal space to rejuvenate and relax. Antique lamps can be placed at corners to create that whimsical glow.
Party Pad
Spaces like an outdoor bar or barbeque area make for the ideal spot to entertain guests. The incorporation of a built-in seating or bar counter can extend your living room area into the outdoors.
Recreational spaces
You can also upcycle wooden crates into benches with vibrant cushions, creating a cozy nook to read and relax in the evenings under the soft glow of the string lights. Shading elements like pergolas can be installed so one can enjoy their sunny afternoons outdoors.
A splash of green
With the alarming changes in the environment, conscious attempts in design and architecture have been made through the infusion of green elements. Green walls, potted plants and hanging planters can be incorporated into the outdoor areas to retain the inherent connection between humans and nature. Change of flooring texture to turf can enhance the aesthetic appeal of the space.
Mischief zone
Not too far away from the threshold of your house, the balcony/terrace areas can be transformed into play areas for children and pets- locked away from the privileges of a park or playground. Along with a blackboard hung on the railing, simple additions of a sandbox or a swing can make the place look interesting.
