Forget pop-ups, travelling bars are the new nightlife concept taking over cities

There’s something special about a bar that feels rooted in its city, but what happens when the bar itself is constantly on the move? Travelling bars and short-term residencies bring a different kind of energy to the drinking scene, adapting their menus, experiences and personalities to every new city they land in. This time, Bar Find and Clumsies, the Athens-based bar, has made its way to Bombay, bringing with it an experience that goes beyond simply recreating a bar elsewhere. From the curation and cocktails to the details that make it feel distinctly Bombay, this is what a travelling bar looks like when it truly embraces its new home.

A speakeasy with a one-way ticket

On paper, Bar Find looks like any other buzzy new bar: low lighting, carefully curated playlists, a menu that makes you want to photograph every drink. Except this bar arrived in Mumbai in early June with no intention of staying. It's a residency inside KMC Bistro, parked in the heritage building Kitaab Mahal, and it's only in town for a few months before packing up and moving to the next city.

The idea was born out of disruption. After the original Bar Find space in Kolkata was abruptly shut down, the team faced a choice: close the chapter or reimagine what a bar could be. They chose the latter. "If we have a travelling bar, a bar within a bar and if it moves, how will it operate and how will people react to it?" became the guiding question.

What emerged is a nomadic cocktail experience that sets up shop in major Indian cities for two to three months at a time, then moves on, taking its menu, ethos and entire vibe with it.

Diganta Chakraborty, founder of Bar Find, says, “Whenever we move to a new space, everything that we do changes. We at Bar Find go agnostic of a hyper-local menu in a way that it could travel in any city, country or place. It’s not supremely esoteric, and no matter where you are, you will find the flavours favourable.”

For a city like Mumbai, where new restaurants and bars open (and close) at dizzying speed, the travelling model flips the script. Instead of waiting for customers to come to one fixed location, Bar Find goes where the drinkers are, turning each residency into a limited-edition experience with its own timeline, menu, and local collaborations.

Cocktails as a moving story

Walk in, and you'll find a 10-drink cocktail menu developed with international input by Matteo Ciarpaglini. The drinks are paired with a food menu designed specially for Bar Find by KMC Bistro, because a travelling bar still needs a kitchen to call home.

The result feels like a pop-up gallery for your palate. Each city gets its own chapter. Mumbai's menu is different from Kolkata's, which will be different again from Bengaluru's when Bar Find lands there next. For the drinker, that means fresh, evolving menus that reflect each city's energy, collaborations with local chefs and hospitality teams, and a built-in sense of urgency. If you don't go now, the bar literally won't be here next season.

Chakraborty adds, “Bar Find works heavily on FOMO too. We are in one place one day and the next day in another, creating an indelible hype and the fear of missing out on an experience. It also adds to the vibe and charm of the place that we move from one place to another and is always fresh.”

In Athens, The Clumsies, a fixture on The World's 50 Best Bars list, has been collaborating with fine artists to translate creative concepts into drinks, with each cocktail reflecting an individual artistic vision. Elvis, the bar manager, says, “A travelling bar brings something that a permanent space can’t always offer: a sense of discovery. You take the spirit, the people and the hospitality of a bar and place them somewhere unexpected, creating a temporary meeting point between two different communities.”

When bars become cultural hubs

Bars such as Bar Find and Clumsies bring together a cross-pollination between art, design, and mixology that fits into a larger global shift where bars are no longer just places to get drunk; they're spaces to experience ideas. In India, we're already seeing this play out through global bar takeovers, guest shifts, and now, full-blown travelling residencies.

Elvis adds, “We believe that identity is not about repeating the same thing everywhere. The Clumsies is rooted in Athens, but we are constantly curious about the world around us. When we travel, we take our values with us: our hospitality, our creativity, our attention to detail, and above all our people, while leaving room for the local culture and the character of each host bar to influence the experience.”

For people who treat nightlife as part of their cultural diet, this is the sweet spot: a night out that feels curated, story-driven, and just a little bit exclusive, without veering into intimidating, hush-hush territory.

The business of a bar that moves

Behind the romance of a travelling bar is a very practical calculation. Offsite locations and mobile events are growing 20–25 per cent year-on-year across metros like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi, as hotels and restaurants look for new revenue streams. For brands, a travelling concept helps dodge "fatigue and saturation that comes with being stationary in a single location", while keeping the buzz alive across multiple markets.

Bar Find's roadmap reflects that strategy. After Mumbai, the plan includes a three-month Bengaluru pop-up and a return to Kolkata in about six months.

“For Bangalore, we are working on familiar flavours that Bangalore likes. We will take some of our best sellers from Bombay and add what Bangalore likes: tough, bold flavours, esoteric adaptations owing to the city’s new boom cocktail program as a whole. Matteo is coming down to help us build from scratch. The long-term vision is, of course, to have a bar find in every city, but with a very different vibe and character. Whilst we are setting up Bangalore, we are already figuring out the next style of bar find in Bombay, so that we come back differently.” Chakraborty concludes.

The concept of travelling bars is definitely a new one, but we are seeing a change in how bars today, or even people, experience and consume cocktails and food designed to fit their lifestyle and culture. Bar Find is one of those catch-me-if-you-can bar scenes and the kind we’re hopping on.
