As a floral designer, Seema Shah is often asked how to keep flowers fresh for longer during summer. The truth is, flowers are extremely sensitive to heat, and maintaining them is not just about care but about understanding their nature. Over the years, working across homes, events, and large-scale installations, she has realised that consistency and attention to small details make the biggest difference. With a few simple yet intentional practices, she believes you can significantly extend their life and keep your arrangements looking elegant and well-composed.
Always start with fresh cuts
“Your flowers are only as good as the way you prepare them,” says Seema Shah. “I always recommend trimming stems at a 45-degree angle before placing them in water. It allows better absorption and keeps the flowers hydrated.” She also stresses removing any leaves below the waterline to prevent bacteria build-up. Even if your flowers look fresh, this step is non-negotiable.
Be mindful of placement
In summer, where you place your flowers matters as much as how you care for them. Heat is the biggest enemy. Direct sunlight, kitchen counters, and warm corners can drastically shorten their life. A cooler spot or an air-conditioned room can make a noticeable difference, proving that placement is not just aesthetic, but essential.
Water care is essential
“One of the most overlooked steps is changing the water regularly,” Shah notes. “In warm weather, I suggest doing it daily or at least every alternate day.” Keeping the vase clean is equally important. She recommends a simple trick: “Add a pinch of sugar and a drop of bleach. It nourishes the flowers while keeping bacteria under control.” Re-trimming stems every few days also helps maintain hydration.
Choose your flowers wisely
Not all blooms thrive in the heat. Shah suggests opting for more resilient varieties like carnations, chrysanthemums, orchids, anthuriums, and marigolds. These hold their structure well in summer and can be paired with softer blooms for a more layered, styled arrangement that balances beauty with durability.
Keep arrangements minimal and breathable
“In summer, less is more,” she says. Avoid overcrowding stems in a single vase. Giving each flower space improves air circulation and extends its life. The result is not just longer-lasting blooms, but a cleaner, more refined aesthetic.
Avoid common mistakes
There are a few pitfalls Shah always flags: keep flowers away from ripening fruits, which release gases that speed up wilting; never leave them in a parked car; and remove wilted stems immediately so they do not affect the rest of the arrangement.
Care is part of styling
“Flowers are living elements, and how you care for them reflects in how they look,” Shah explains. A well-maintained arrangement will always feel fresher, more elevated, and more intentional. Beautiful flowers are not just about how you arrange them, but how you care for them. With the right approach, even peak summer blooms can stay fresh, elegant, and long-lasting.
