Strike a chord: Indie band The Yellow Diary talks about their process and inspirations

Known for their unique blend of rock and electronic music, The Yellow Diary is an indie boyband formed in 2015. We, at Cosmopolitan India, caught up with the band to find out more about what inspired them to come together, how they create such fresh music and more. Read on!

Cosmo India (CI): Tell us about your journey as musicians and what inspired you to come together as a band.

The Yellow Diary (YD): From the moment I (Stuart DaCosta) met Rajan Batra and felt the need for a bigger sound to Sahil Shah, Harsh Gadhvi, and myself bringing our unique flavours to The Yellow Diary, our journey feels like a divine intervention. The deep connection we share as friends creates a collaborative atmosphere and a safe space for exploring every emotional avenue.

CI: That one moment that truly brings you joy.

YD: For a musician, each day brings new moments of joy, whether stumbling upon ideas for compositions, connecting with the audience on stage or mastering challenging pieces of music.

CI: What is your process of blending energies and collaborating to create something fresh in an already saturated music scene?

YD: Recognising complementary skills and styles and fostering mutual respect is essential. Artists should be receptive to feedback and facilitate the song until they find a cohesive blend that resonates. Technology facilitates remote collaborations but the key lies in genuine passion and a willingness to experiment.

CI: Share a moment when you thought that you’d finally made it.

YD: When someone blasts our tunes in their car or when we hear our songs being sung back at us at a concert. Writing songs that resonate is the goal and being able to do that every day feels like a good starting point.

CI: What are you most grateful for?

YD: As a band, we are incredibly grateful for our amazing team at Shark & Ink, their support allows us to focus on our music and evolve as better artists. Over the years, we’ve been expanding our team, gearing up for better shows to make our mark on the global stage. Our sound engineer Div, our stage tech Hemant, and our tour manager Mohit, have all been instrumental in our journey. We’re excited about the opportunities this year brings.

In the four-part 'Strike A Chord' series, Indian musicians open up about the changing music scene, their journey, inspiration, and the glimmer moments they’ve experienced.
