What is "aura farming" and why is the internet obsessed with it?

You know how people say you learn something new every day? Well, scratch that—it’s more like learning something new every scroll. Especially with Gen Z and Gen Alpha steering the wheel of pop culture, we are being introduced to a new internet buzzword with every other post. And the latest one making the rounds is “aura farming.” It sounds cute and harmless, but don’t be fooled—it’s a full-blown aesthetic lifestyle.

What is aura farming?

If someone comes across as effortlessly cool, chill vibes, sharp style, and confidence that doesn’t scream, it’s safe to say they’ve got aura. Now, if that same person is actively curating that vibe, layering on purposefully minimalist fits, striking just the right poses, and leaning into the mystique, that’s called aura farming. Also known as “aura maxxing,” this new-age slang is like charisma cultivation with a digital twist.

The term originally popped off in anime fan spaces, where characters with that intense, unbothered energy were being hyped for their vibes alone. It didn’t take long for the internet to adopt it and expand it into a full-fledged identity marker, used to describe anyone deliberately crafting a persona that screams “main character energy.”

The Indonesian kid who made aura farming viral

One of the best IRL examples of aura farming is an 11-year-old Indonesian boy, Rayyan Arkan Dikha, who basically broke the internet just by being the coolest kid on a boat. During the Pacu Jalur race—a longboat competition in Sumatra—he stood poised at the bow, dressed in all black, sunglasses on, serving a cool and confident dance move as the boat glided forward. He didn’t flinch. He didn’t blink. He just moved with the kind of self-assurance that makes the rest of us look like we’re trying too hard. Within days, he became a global meme, a dance trend, and a viral symbol of ultimate aura farming.

From TikTok to the football field, everyone’s copying the moves of this cool Indonesian kid. Big names in sports—F1 racer Alex Albon, NFL star Travis Kelce, even the Paris Saint-Germain football team—have jumped on the trend, turning it into an elite athlete flex. You know a vibe is powerful when it leaps from internet meme to locker-room warmup.

And then there’s the celebrity aura masters. Dune’s Timothée Chalamet is practically the blueprint. As Paul Atreides, cloaked in desert robes and commanding armies with quiet intensity, he didn’t just play the role—he embodied peak aura. Every slow walk, side glance, and cape swish screamed calculated cool. Aura farming isn’t just about being fashionable—it’s about turning presence into power.

In essence, aura farming is Gen Z’s rebrand of swagger. It’s not about being loud or over-the-top—it’s about fine-tuning your energy, finessing your style, and making sure that, even when you’re standing still, you’re the most interesting person in the room.
