Lately, my social media feed has been full of recycled fashion featuring outfits made from plastic, scrap, and other everyday rubbish you’d never expect to see on a model. And yet, Kalu Putik has managed to make it look surprisingly chic. The Ethiopian fashion creator went viral for styling complete looks using things most of us would throw away. Somehow, it still reads like high fashion, the kind of look that makes you stop mid-doomscroll.
What makes it even better is how real it feels. There’s no fancy studio, big production, or luxury setup. It’s literally just him, his creativity, a wooden board he balances on while showing off each look in his signature style, and whatever materials he can find around him. His videos feel like mini fashion shows staged on the street, and people are loving how raw, unfiltered, and refreshingly different they are from the overly polished content we’re used to seeing online.
But first things first. Who is Kalu Putik? A self-taught fashion creator from Ethiopia, Putik didn’t go to a big design school or have access to expensive tools or fabrics. He simply started creating with what was most easily accessible to him, and slowly turned it into something the fashion world can no longer ignore.
He works with old shoes, plastic, cardboard, wire, foil, and fabric scraps to build his looks. And these are far from basic DIY outfits. His designs are bold, oversized, and unapologetically dramatic, the kind that look right at home in a high-fashion editorial or on a runway.
Why is everyone obsessed
One of the biggest reasons his videos are so addictive is the element of surprise. They usually begin with what looks like a pile of random materials and a boy balancing on a wooden board. Then, almost suddenly, it turns into a full outfit that not only works but looks genuinely cool.
He also models his own designs, which makes the whole thing even more fun to watch. The confidence, the attitude, the way he carries each look, it all adds to the appeal and makes every video feel like a full fashion moment unfolding on your screen.
With just 21 posts on his Instagram grid, Putik has already amassed 3.7 million followers. And if his creativity was not entertaining enough, the internet was equally amused by the fact that he appeared to ignore a comment from Instagram’s official handle asking to feature his work.
Why this moment matters
Putik is part of a larger shift happening in fashion right now. People are slowly moving away from the idea that style has to come from big brands or expensive labels, and paying far more attention to creativity and originality instead. His work is proof that you do not need a huge budget to create something worth noticing.
It also feeds into larger conversations around sustainability. He is quite literally reusing waste and turning it into something wearable, pushing people to rethink what fashion can look like. It is not about buying more, but about creating differently.
His rise is also a reminder that talent can come from anywhere and that you no longer need to be in a major fashion capital to be seen. Right now, the internet is paying attention.
