Conçu lands in Mumbai with pastries, coffee, and plenty of charm

Hyderabad’s cult patisserie and café is in the city with a Colaba debut and dreamy desserts, inventive coffee, all-day comfort food, and a vibe designed for long conversations.

One thing that I like best about cafés is the ultimate pausing of time. No matter what’s going on outside the doors or inside your deadline-driven timelines, catching up over a cup of coffee and a plate of cake, with friends or solo, is one of the easiest ways to slow down, at least for an hour.

So when I discovered that Conçu has opened its doors in a quiet lane of Colaba, I naturally had to make my way there. I discovered that there’s no such thing as a quick coffee here. Take the space: warm colours, an expansive space, high ceilings. Take the seating: cosy window corners, tucked-away couches, and an inviting community table. Take the offerings: food, dessert, coffee, even cocktails.

A café that understands the assignment

Today’s cafés need to do more than serve good food; they need to create a feeling. The idea behind Conçu is simple: create a space where people want to stay. Not just a place to grab a pastry, but a modern-day gathering spot where mornings unfold lazily, friends linger over drinks, and every table feels like it has a story.

The space blends old-world charm with a contemporary aesthetic. Think exposed brick, layered seating, warm corners, and a beautiful play of natural light pouring through the triple-height structure. By day, it’s calm, like the place you’d pick to go to. By evening, the mood shifts. The lights soften, the bar comes alive, and Conçu transforms into the kind of spot where “one last drink” is almost guaranteed to become several.

After building a loyal following across Hyderabad and Bengaluru for 14 years, the much-loved patisserie and café has arrived in Mumbai, and is designed for slow mornings, laptop afternoons, spontaneous dessert plans, and evenings that start with coffee and somehow end with cocktails.

But first, let’s get a coffee

If there’s one thing Conçu gets unequivocally right, it’s the coffee. The beverage menu moves beyond the usual café staples, with playful creations that make a strong case for ordering something new.

The Spanish iced latte comes spiced with cinnamon and is creamy, chilled and dangerously easy to love. If you’re looking for something more decadent, try the French vanilla gelato blended cold coffee, and if you’re feeling experimental, go for the miso caramel cold brew. If you’re skipping coffee altogether, the ube coconut cloud is the drink to pick: pretty, dreamy and made for those “wait, let me take a picture first” moments.

Coffee purists, don’t despair. You’re in for an equal treat: think cappuccinos, espressos and lattes as strong as you’d like them. There’s an equally interesting selection of tea as well, like the peach melba starring white peach, raspberries and Assam tea.

Food that’s as comforting as it’s chic

The food menu follows a simple philosophy: familiar favourites with thoughtful upgrades. The roasted root vegetable salad incorporates slow-roasted vegetables, garbanzo beans, honey harissa, arugula and feta sour cream in a dish that feels fresh and flavourful. The summer salad is another light option, balancing crunchy vegetables, seasonal fruit, feta and candied walnuts, brightened with a lemon mustard vinaigrette. The hummus with pillowy-soft pita and crunchy falafels is a must-try.

For something more indulgent, the pizza-style cheese garlic bread is an immediate must-order. Loaded with buffalo mozzarella, parmesan and fior di latte on a buttery garlic crust, it’s exactly the kind of comfort food you want sitting in front of you during a long café session. Even the burrata pannacotta dotted with pink peppercorn and tomato berry jam leaves a pleasant surprise upon your taste buds.

The avocado sourdough remains a reliable classic, while the jerk chicken skewers bring smoky, spiced flavours with freshly baked pita and a cooling ranch dip, perfect for sharing. I found the textures of carrot with burrata to be a standout, elevating a simple ingredient into a concoction that features roasted, creamed and dehydrated carrot paired with burrata, orange segments, toasted baguette and candied walnuts.

And yes, save room for dessert

Leaving Conçu without trying their dessert is an impossible task, especially with the open pastry counter tempting you from the moment you arrive. The brand’s roots are in the patisserie space, and that still remains its strongest pull. The first thing that will catch every connoisseur’s eye is the meticulous attention to detail. The second is the stunning range.

What stands out across each is the almost ethereally light array of layers. Flaky, buttery, and a melt-in-your-mouth promise accompanies every bite. From vanilla choux buns to exotic fruit tarts, midnight sonnets to the classic opera, and more elaborate options like the brioche French toast, the offerings are delectable.

After-hours mischief

Conçu surprisingly isn’t only about coffee and cakes. As evening arrives, the café moves into a more spirited mood with cocktails and drinks made for seconds. Though of course, if you’re in the mood for a cheeky cocktail during the day, we’d support that too.

There is equal care given to the composition of the drinks as there is for the food; think the Conçu colada, that’s a tropical favourite, mixing coconut tequila and coconut water for a refreshing twist, while the rouge republic mocktail brings together spiced hibiscus, pomegranate, citrus, and bubbles for something vibrant and refreshing.

With its warm interiors, open dessert counter, thoughtful menu, and a very strong coffee game, Conçu is perfect for a tête-à-tête with your best friend, or a visit that you could pair with a book and pain au chocolat.
