She’s Got the Look: Meet the Women of the 2020 Academy Awards

It was the year of the women at the 2020 Oscars that happened in LA recently, and everybody got buzzing about the Academy’s nod to #WomenPower. For starters, this year saw the highest number of female nominees ever at 31%. Then, there was the fact that Little Women, a film about women and made predominantly by women, was up for 6 awards, including Best Picture. Both on the screen and behind it, women were recognised for their unique brand of talent, as well as their unique brand of self. This self was translated into the hair, makeup and outfit choices made by these immensely talented women as they walked down the red carpet. Haircare brand Tresemme recognises how a great hair day gives you the confidence to walk taller and conquer the world. Tresemme’s years of experience and expertise in the haircare industry has led them to understand that when you are looking your best, you feel empowered to be your best, and perform your best.  From directors to actors to costume designers, we take a look at some of the ladies who rocked the 2020 Academy Awards.

1. Renee Zelwegger, winner Best Actress, Judy:

Renee floored audiences and wowed the jury at the Academy Awards with her performance as legendary actress Judy Garland. Dressed in a glittering white, figure-hugging, one-shoulder gown by Armani Prive, the actress looked like a million bucks. She kept her hair and makeup sleek and minimal, with her hair parted in the middle and slicked back into a low bun.

2. Laura Dern, winner Best Supporting Actress,  Marriage Story :

Laura won the Oscar for her critically-acclaimed performance as Nora Fanshaw in Marriage Story. The actress wowed in a blush pink gown with a black embellished neckline by Armani Prive’. Classic and glamorous are two key adjectives we’d use to describe Laura’s deep side-part, half-up style and subtle pink makeup.

3. Scarlett Johansson, nominee, Best Actress Marriage Story and Supporting Actress Jojo Rabbit  :

Scarlett created history by becoming the 12th actor ever to receive two Oscar nominations for acting in the same year! She hit the red carpet in a custom shimmery-silver satin Oscar de la Renta dress with a mesh bodice and draped fabric. Wearing her hair swept up into a stylish twist at the back of her head,  she accessorized her look with diamond drop earrings, a bracelet and her sparkling engagement ring from fiancé Colin Jost.

4. Margot Robbie, nominee Best Supporting Actress, Bombshell:

This was the second Oscar nomination for Margot Robbie (she was nominated for best actress in 2017 for I, Tonya). Old-Hollywood glamour was the prevalent theme at the 2020 Oscar red carpet, and Margot’s glossy red lip and soft waves made for the perfect modern-day version of it. She wore a navy-blue, strapless, Grecian Chanel gown with a jewel-pendent detail.

5. Saoirse Ronan, nominee Best Actress, Little Women:

Nominated for a film that celebrates women, and made by a cast and crew that is female-strong, Saorise attended the awards wearing a dramatic, avant-garde Gucci gown with a plunging neckline and peplum frill. Her hair framed her face with short, wispy bangs (thanks to her longtime hairstylist Adir Abergel), and she complimented her look with a beige-pink lip.

6. Jacqueline Durran, winner, Achievement in Costume Design:

This was the second Oscar win for Jacqueline Durran, who has been nominated a whopping six times in this category (you go, lady!).  Jacqueline kept her look polished in a classic black-and-white dress, with her hair swept back in a stylish top coiffure with a side-swept front.

7. Greta Gerwig, nominee, Best Adapted Screenplay:

The director of Little Women, nominated in the Best-Adapted Screenplay category was a vision of elegance. Dressed in a Christian Dior Haute Couture gown in a forest-green hue, she wore with matching emerald jewels to complete her look. Greta’s makeup was radiant, and she wore her hair pulled back in a sleek, low ponytail with her fringe swept eleganty to a side.

So there you have it, a few of the many ladies who rocked the Academy Awards this year, and the hair and makeup looks that defined them. We are loving their unique brand of style, some classic, some avant-garde, all of them fabulous!
