A Homemade Gooseberry and Coconut Oil to Boost Hair Growth and Prevent Greying

While a diverse range of chemically-prepared hair oils, shampoos, and serums promise to nurture your scalp and follicles and promote hair growth, homemade alternatives can often do the trick as well. An effective combination of gooseberry, popularly known as 'amla', coconut oil and sesame oil works wonders when it comes to tackling premature greying of hair. The potent formula also curbs hair fall and boosts healthy hair growth, along with stimulating blood flow to your scalp.

Try Shahnaz Husain's go-to homemade hair oil—whipped up using staple kitchen ingredients—lending the goodness of coconut oil, gooseberry and sesame oil.

Ingredients

2 Gooseberies, sliced into 4 halves

2 tbsp of Sesame Oil

4 tbsp of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Directions:

1) Chop two gooseberries into four slices each, and leave them to dry for at least an hour, under some shade.

2) Add two tablespoons of sesame oil and four tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil to the dried gooseberries.

3) Heat the mixture on a low flame, until it starts boiling. Let the oil cool in the pan itself.

4) Once cool, pour the mix into a jar or bottle and store it away from direct sunlight.

5) Use the hair oil one week after storage.

Enriched with Vitamin C and tannins, gooseberries offer nourishing properties, possessing up to 80 percent moisture. The Vitamin C content present in amla works to get rid of flakiness and dryness, clears build-up of impurities in your scalp, and restores its pH balance as well. Frequent hair oiling also helps retain natural hair colour, while the essential fatty acids penetrate deep into the follicles, stimulating hair growth and giving way to lustrous, voluminous locks.

Coconut oil, on the other hand, gradually slows down loss of hair by penetrating deep into the hair shaft to prevent protein loss, which in turn, prevents breakage. Similarly, sesame oil boosts hydration and moisturisation, and targets a range of common woes such as dandruff, itchiness, and inflammation.
