How to Style Curly Hair: 5 Tips and Tricks Every Girl Should Know

Curls aren't solely a hair type, but a whole lifestyle! And with wavy to curly hair making up for 60% of the Indian population, knowing how to style and care for your tresses is a must. There’s never any easy cruising for curly hair girls—one day you’re rolling with coils defined to the T, while the next day you’re a tangled mess. In short, maintaining and managing curly hair isn't a cake walk, and the struggle to find the right set of products and haircare routine is real.

However, for experts at BBLUNT, tackling curly hair is an art they've managed to master. "The general perception of the population is that curly hair is difficult to maintain and style, whereas, in reality, it's the easiest hair type to manage. Once you've found the right haircare arsenal—products and tools that suit your hair type and hair cut—you're good to go," explains Adhuna. Take note of these cardinal haircare rules every curly hair girl should follow:

The Art of Identifying the Perfect Product

To determine the right set of products for you, two key parameters should be kept in mind: first, the type of curls you have (for instance corkscrew curls, soft curls, natural waves etc), and second, the hair density. This will help gauge the type of shampoo and conditioner you should use for your hair, as well as the quantity of product required. BBLUNT's newly launched curl-care range introduces the 'Pre-Poo', a unique pre-wash, deep-nourishing detangler infused with the moisture-rich benefit of coconut water and Aloe extract to hydrate your curls from the inside out, while minimising breakage and reducing frizz. "This nourishing concoction helps trap in moisture in your strands, preventing them from drying out," informs Adhuna.

Don't Skip Hair Conditioning!

Remember to always follow a shampoo cleanse with a conditioner. According to Adhuna, a conditioner that’s specially designed to work with curly hair helps provide a healthy dose of hydration and protection that your hair isn’t able to derive from shampoo alone. Pro tip: If your curls are flat on top, try rinsing your hair upside down. Rinsing your hair with your head back can flatten out your curls, causing them to lose volume. Besides conditioning, a great curl defining leave-in cream is the ideal styling finish for your hair type.Pro tip: Use a diffuser to nail hair definition!

Protect Your Curls During Your Sleep

Protecting your hair while you're sleep is actually a crucial step in caring for textured hair. "No matter how expensive your sheets may be, their cotton fabric is still far too harsh on your delicate strands. To prevent this from happening, try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf or sleeping on a silk pillowcase, which will reduce the amount of friction your hair is exposed to throughout the night," suggests Adhuna.

Consult a Hairstylist Who Understands Your Hair

As for any other hair texture, your haircut should be tailor-made according to the nature of your curls. This may depend on a number of factors—from your hair type to your facial features, body structure, lifestyle, personality and how you choose to wear your hair. To meet all your hair needs and requirements, it's important that you get a trusted stylist on board. "The key is to know how much length and weight you need to keep. Once you have found the right haircut, you will find it easy to embrace the natural texture of your curls. My advice is to get a consultation with a professional hair stylist for the right guidance," she adds.

Avoid Combing Your Hair Post a Shower

"Don’t comb or brush your hair out post a shower, or when it's dry. This tends to shatter the curl pattern, leading to more frizz. You may also consider adding colour to your curly hair, as it helps add depth and definition," says Adhuna.
