Kareena Kapoor Khan: I never succumbed to the pressure of conforming to certain beauty standards

In an exclusive interview with Cosmo India, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan speaks to Cosmo India about her evolving definition of beauty, why she admires her sister Karisma Kapoor, and the mindful skincare rituals she swears by.

Cosmo: Tell us about your beauty philosophy...

Kareena Kapoor Khan: “According to me, beauty doesn’t have a set definition. I believe beauty is personal—as long as you feel comfortable in your own skin, you are golden.”

C: Has motherhood changed what beauty means to you?

KKK: “Definitely. I believe it has broadened my understanding of what the term means. It goes beyond what meets the eye. During my second pregnancy, I developed dark circles and had puffy eyes and dry patches all over my face... Coming to terms with how I looked and felt at that time was a turning point in my life. That phase made me realise the importance of being patient and feeling beautiful, no matter what.”

C: And what makes you feel beautiful?

KKK: “I believe confidence is the key to feeling beautiful. I consider self-love and personal growth as the core pillars of beauty. Over the years, I have become more inclined towards meditation, yoga, and mindful eating, and it has played a major role in making me feel beautiful from the inside out.”

C: What was your skincare routine like when you were younger?

KKK: “I loved using DIY face masks with my sister [Karisma Kapoor]. In fact, a crushed almond and honey mask is my go-to, even today.”

C: Growing up, who was your style icon...especially from the film industry?

KKK: “It has to be my sister. Like every younger sibling, for me, too, my sister is my idol. From her sense of style to the way she carries herself—I admire absolutely everything about her.”

C: Being in the film business, did you ever feel pressured to look a certain way?

KKK: “Being brought up in a family full of actors, I have first-handedly experienced why conversations about self-confidence are important. Luckily, I never really succumbed to the pressure of conforming to a certain standard of beauty because I was surrounded by strong female figures, who deeply inspired me. Their learnings and their journeys have taught me so much, and that has been my biggest blessing.”

C: What does it take to maintain a good work-life balance?

KKK: “I think I have cracked the code to maintain the perfect work-life balance. If I am constantly working for a few days, I make it a point to take a short break and spend quality time with my family and friends. They are incredibly important to me.”

C: What do you do to maintain hair health?

KKK: “Scalp care is very important. To ensure that my hair feels healthy, I oil my hair once a week using St. Botanica’s Moroccan Argan Hair Oil. It is my go-to product, especially during the winter season.”

C: What do you love the most about St. Botanica?

KKK: “When it comes to haircare, I choose my products very carefully. That’s why I deeply resonate with St.Botanica’s philosophy. The brand offers quality formulations that have been thoroughly researched. Not only that, but their well-curated, exotic ingredients deliver excellent results, too. I was delighted to experience this—not just as the face of the brand’s haircare range, but also as a consumer.”

C: Do you ever have moments of self-doubt?

KKK: “Of course, I am only human. During the first few days post my second pregnancy, I realised the importance of keeping my mental and physical health in check.”

C: What keeps you motivated?

KKK: “I love my job, and I believe I am truly lucky to be an actor. One is constantly learning in this profession, and I get to meet new people and have interesting conversations. I thrive on these experiences.”

C: What brings you joy?

KKK: “My family and friends. I am very close to my loved ones, and the time I get to spend with them is something I cherish and hold close to my heart.”
