The Twitter Timeline Will Soon Be Showing Tweets Out of Order

According to Buzzfeed News, a  Twitter timeline update - which the site says could be introduced as soon as next week - may see tweets displayed out of reverse chronological order. That means, instead of seeing the newest tweets at the top of the page, an algorithm could push those that are most relevant or popular to the top instead.

Now, if it's true, it's not exactly a shock. In 2014, CFO Anthony Noto said that showing tweets in reverse chronological order "isn't the most relevant experience for the user". Throw in the fact that Facebook has long been pushing out posts out of order, and it's hardly a surprise that another social media site could be choosing to do the same.

Maybe I'm just speaking for myself here, but isn't Facebook's lack of order one of the most frustrating things about the site? Engagement and baby announcements crop up three days after they were made, and it causes a delay in stalking sessions when photos from a party you missed aren't pushed into your feed.

However, there might be pros. If Twitter is giving us content that's more relevant to us, our thumb could get a break from all of that scrolling, scrolling, scrolling. We just hope that they take a cue from Facebook and add a 'Most Recent' option - which, by the sounds of this tweet from Josh Sternberg, director of branded content for NBC News, could be the case...
