7 Ways To Make Sustainable Fashion Choices

Reorganise your closet

Reorganise your closet from time to time. An organised closet will make you feel that you have more clothes. "What remains in your closet after you have organized it are the things that you love and wear more often," says celebrity stylist Akshay Tyagi.

Make sustainable fashion choices

Adopting a sustainable lifestyle means tackling every aspect of consumption. Akshay suggests that with clothing you carefully choose brands, who use ethically procured materials and follow sustainable practices at their workplace. Read up about the brand and do your research before investing.

Take care of your garments

Buying organic clothes is not enough. Make what you buy last by taking care of your product. Wash it with care and keep it safe. "Washing and drying accounts for two thirds of the impact of fashion on the environment. Washing your clothes after each use is often more about habit than hygiene and not always necessary. Many garments just need to be aired out properly to be good for another wear," says Akshay.

Re-wear your clothes

Try to consume less and find ways to re-wear your items more often. You can style your jacket or blazer with a number of tops and bottoms. Be creative and push your style boundaries, advises Akshay.

Upcycle more

Upcycling items when they age and wear out is one of the best ways to upgrade your wardrobe. Adding patches of older shirts or badges from other wardrobe items, using paint, lace and other DIY materials can reform old clothes into brand new ones. Upcycled clothing uses significantly fewer raw materials, reducing the harmful impacts of fashion production.

Exchange

Akshay's fail-safe mantra is: do a clothes swap with friends and find new items without having to spend a penny!

Rent outfits you will wear only a few times

Renting outfits gives you more options to try out. It saves space and money. "It reduces the burden on the environment and helps in cutting down fashion's carbon footprint," says Akshay.
