Signs That Your Lingerie Needs To Be Replaced

Have you ever wondered when you should throw away bra and undies from your wardrobe? The bra seemed a tad too loose but you ignored it or the underwear looked shapeless but you still kept it. Let us tell you that the right time to buy new lingerie is not when you spot them looking pretty on a shop window or on an online shopping portal. Lingerie is not for life, according to Kiruba Devi, category head at Zivame.com, “Changing your Bra every six months is a good idea. Especially If you have your four-five basic Bras that take you to work, beyond, and back every day. Wearing them in rotation is a great way to make them last longer and prevent them from wearing out too fast.”

And if you have been washing them in the washing machine then the padding on the bra would lose shape faster and the elastic tends to wear out quicker. As a result the bra or theundie becomes unsupportive and slack. Watch out for these signs and act!

They have lost elasticity

The back band of a bra naturally stretches out over time. When this happens, the hooks allow you to choose a tighter position to get a snug fit. Take note, when the band is so stretched out that it feels too loose even on the tightest hook. Also, check if the straps are loose. “Bra straps tend to lose their shape after continuous wear and tear. If the bra straps are falling off your shoulder, even after repeated adjustments, it's time to ditch them,” says Devi. Same goes for the panties, if the waistband has lost its elasticity and it tends to fall off from the body, throw it.

They don’t fit

If you notice a significant gap between the bra cups and your breasts, it means that either the cups are stretched out or due to weight loss, breasts have shrunk in size. As a result, the bra shape peeks through your clothes. “Also if you notice spillage, the cups seems too small, you need to go up a size. Our bodies change constantly you need to keep that in mind,” says Devi. The same goes for panties. After multiple washes, they tend to shrink and can feel tighter and uncomfortable.

They cause discomfort

Bra underwires tend to bend after several washes, especially if they are machine washed. This may result in poking, pain and discomfort. If you are experiencing this, it's time to move on. And if you are wearing lacy panties they tend to wear out and cause irritation to the skin.

Fabric wear and tear

The lifespan of a Bra’s fabric depends on your wearing and washing cycle. If you notice that the fabric is getting damaged i.e. spandex is peeling off, or the overall fabric is losing its stretch, your bra won’t be supportive anymore! Your undies might not show the signs right away but once they feel loose or fade in colour, which usually happens after 6 months, you should change them.
