Everything You Need to Know About the Girls Locker Room Controversy

Leaked screenshots of underage Delhi boys from an Instagram chatroom named  ‘Bois Locker Room’ have stirred outrage and sparked controversy about the underbelly of rape culture in India, women’s safety, objectification and consent. Many people took to the internet to voice their opinions, including actor Maanvi Gabroo who shared an open letter with Cosmopolitan India, talking about how the objectification of women needs to stop NOW.

Amidst all this, posts regarding a girl’s chat room of a somewhat similar nature, being dubbed as the ‘Girl’s Locker Room” have emerged. Members of this girls-only group are alleged to sexualise and objectify boys and body-shame both boys and girls. Leaked screenshots of the group have been going viral on social media. These posts have sparked a whole new discussion, with netizens arguing that it's not just boys and men, even girls and women are active partakers in perpetuating body-shaming and objectification via sexually explicit remarks.

Some argue that there is a marked difference between the two groups, as there were actual conversations and references made to rape and gang-raping women in the 'Bois Locker Room' Chat. Meanwhile, two days after the 'Bois Locker Room' Instagram chat room was exposed on Twitter, Delhi police took a south Delhi school student into custody. As alleged screenshots of a #GirlsLockerRoom now surface, various point of views are emerging with regard to the disturbing events that have occurred over the past few days. As people continue to voice their opinions via Tweets and posts, the one thing that seems clear is that any conversation that perpetuates a culture of objectification is not ok, regardless of the gender of those involved.
