6 female DJs who rightfully claim their space behind the console

In a world where the decks are often dominated by men, these trailblazing female DJs are turning the tables—literally and figuratively. From overcoming industry stereotypes to creating electrifying experiences that transcend gender, these women are redefining what it means to be behind the console. With talent, resilience, and a passion for music, they've proven that no space is off-limits when you bring your unique voice to the mix. Meet six female DJs who are not just playing the music—they're owning it.

DJ Angel aka Rajwender Kaur Johal

On breaking stereotypical shackles

“Music is the universal language of mankind; I’ve always been drawn to music, and DJing helps me curate an immersive experience to connect with people through rhythm, melody, and vibration. While there’s no denying that it is a male-dominated field, I seldom let societal norms dictate my choices. Back when I began, in 2007, female DJs were few and far between. My journey has been challenging, to say the least...but when you bring something unique to the table, people respect your craft regardless of your gender. Each time I get behind the deck and connect with the crowd, it reinforces my belief that I have found my voice. My deep understanding of music and technical expertise set me apart, helping me curate soundscapes that resonate with the audience—add to that my official remixes for the film industry and international collaborations, both of which aid in honing my skills. To the young, aspiring female DJs out there, I’d say trust your talent and stay true to yourself and your sound...don’t be afraid to push the envelope and experiment.”

DJ Gouri aka Gourri Sharma

On paving her own path

“I was enjoying life as a private jet stewardess—turns out, fate had other plans. The DJ community isn’t particularly welcoming to fellow female artists...you’d often chance upon clannish behaviour, and pay parity is condemned, making it doubly difficult to prove your mettle in a space predominantly occupied by men. But what gives me an edge is my ability to read the crowd and mix music accordingly. I prefer live mixing over pre-recorded sets, which makes me a multi-genre disc jockey. And would you believe it...DJing wasn’t even on my bingo card back then! My journey has been both empowering and exhilarating, peppered with challenges galore. It is incredibly fulfilling to carve your own niche in the industry and set an example for aspiring female DJs. Believe them when they say good things take time...you have just got to be patient while on your way. Don’t be afraid to take up space, and don’t let anybody tell you what you are capable of.”

DJ Perch aka Preeti Chauhan

On pushing the envelope

“It is truly incredible how music can shape the energy of a space...it holds the power to evoke emotions and connect souls, and DJing allows me to be at the heart of that experience. Sure, it is an unconventional career choice for women, but the challenge is what makes it all the more exciting. Today, the landscape is changing, and more doors are opening for female artists in the industry—I am grateful to connect with a growing community of women who are redefining what it means to be a disc jockey. I, too, believe that my perspective as a woman in the field adds a fresh take to my music...giving it a personal, emotional depth that resonates with the crowd. Every sound, beat, and genre tells a tale, and I hold those who have had to fight their way through in high esteem. There’s a sense of pride in shattering the glass ceiling in a field that isn’t always welcoming, and it is empowering to know that I’m contributing to a shift in the industry. Each time I step behind the turntable, I am reminded of why I began in the first place...it is what keeps me going.”

DJ Reyhaa aka Reyhaa Suneja

On turning a new leaf

“My tryst with DJing began during the pandemic...I felt creatively stagnant and was searching for something more meaningful. Next thing you know, I had moved to Goa and found myself spending hours on the dance floor, lost in the music. The electronic music scene was flourishing at the time—with DJs playing the part of modern-day magicians. Watching them work their magic behind the console, I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do. Ever since, I have focused on honing my craft and making the most of every opportunity. You will never catch me standing still behind the decks; I’m always engaging with the crowd, throwing in surprises, and channelling pure joy. People tend to underestimate the power of a great party...for me, it’s always been about creating magical moments that one will cherish long after the night ends. Believe it or not, I still remember the tingles from my first music festival like it was yesterday! The industry respects authenticity and skill above all things, and if you’re brave enough to be your most authentic self while consistently delivering quality sets, you will find your place.”

DJ Devaaya aka Priyanka Chandalia

On coming into her own

“My journey behind the turntable began at music festivals and local nightclubs. Inspired by other trailblazing female disc jockeys, I, too, felt compelled to challenge the narrative. My mother has been my biggest source of inspiration...a strong, fearless woman who followed her passion in the face of challenges, her resilience and determination pushed me to pursue my dreams, no matter how far-fetched they have been. Watching her pave her own path taught me the importance of hard work and authenticity, and she has always encouraged me to embrace my creative self. Her consistent support has been a driving force in my journey as a DJ, and her example motivates me to inspire others along the way. While the music industry may seem daunting, remember your voice and perspective are invaluable. Talent knows no gender; this journey is not just about my own success, I have encountered a strong community of women who uplift each other, creating a sense of camaraderie...it is all about championing diversity and inclusion in the industry.”

DJ Tryps aka Trishina Kirpalani

On taking the road less travelled

“My father and I share a deep love for music…soon after he passed, I found out that he’d said ‘a star is born’ when I came into this world. I have always wanted to be a star, and to make him proud, and it just felt right. I was all of 16 when I ventured into this space, and not having heard of enough female disc jockeys, I knew it was a gap in the industry I wanted to fill. Back in the day, I even had a gig cancelled because my pictures weren’t ‘appealing enough to the man’s eye’...these experiences have toughened me up. I have been disrespected, undervalued, and underestimated, but I have faith. And apart from my music, I think my personality, the way I carry myself, and the fact that I am a queer female DJ helps me stand out. Every opportunity reinforces my belief that diversity in this field enriches the music scene, and I am proud to contribute to that change. As for my craft, I am constantly learning and experimenting, and I work on engaging with the audience to elevate my stage presence. Because of how much I love what I do, DJing doesn’t feel like a nine to five—it’s my happy place.”
