When Crazy Rich Asians hit theatres in 2018, the film instantly became a fan favourite as it broke down barriers in Hollywood. The film sparked conversations about Asian representation in the industry, and gave us iconic and relatable characters like Rachel Chu, Nick Young and the ever-intimidating Eleanor. Now, after years of anticipation, Crazy Rich Asians 2 is finally in the works—and fans couldn’t be more excited. The sequel promises to dive deeper into the glamorous (and drama-filled) world of Singapore’s elite, with returning stars, new love stories, and plenty of exciting moments.
It was during the screening of Another Simple Favor, starring Henry Golding, that the actor confirmed that Crazy Rich Asians 2 is finally in the works. While early reports hinted at a direct movie sequel, director Jon M. Chu has since confirmed that the next chapter in the Crazy Rich Asians universe will come in the form of a television series, not a feature film.
The first film followed Rachel, a Chinese-American economics professor, as she travelled to Singapore to meet her boyfriend Nick’s family, only to discover that they’re one of the wealthiest and most influential families in Asia. The film eventually explores Nick navigating complex family expectations, old-money traditions, and a mother-in-law who would rather see Rachel gone.
Now, the upcoming series aims to raise the stakes. Building on the second and third books in Kevin Kwan’s trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, the plot will follow Rachel’s journey to find her long-lost biological father—a storyline that opens the door to an entirely new world in mainland China; one that's even more lavish and politically layered than anything seen before. The audience can expect intense power plays, new family dynamics, and the same razor-sharp wit and emotional storytelling that made the original movie memorable in the first place.
Constance Wu and Henry Golding will reprise their roles as Rachel and Nick, alongside Michelle Yeoh returning as Eleanor—a character many love to hate in the original film. Reports also suggest that other original cast members are expected to return, although new characters from Rachel’s paternal side are likely to take centre stage.
Production is slated to begin later this year. With a longer format, the TV show promises to explore characters and deeper relationship arcs, offering a rich expansion of the first part that fans fell in love with.
