La Taqueria is giving Mexican comfort food the spotlight it deserves

And yes, the guacamole is worth talking about.

La Taqueria is giving Mexican comfort food the spotlight it deserves

Mumbai has never been short on Mexican restaurants, but finding one that balances flavour with a genuinely welcoming atmosphere isn't always easy. That's where La Taqueria at Jio World Plaza comes in. From the team behind Mezcalita, La Taqueria is the newest addition to BKC's dining scene, serving vibrant Mexican flavours, refreshing cocktails, and a guacamole you'll find yourself reordering more than once.

The restaurant takes a more casual, food-first approach while retaining that easy-going energy. The space immediately feels inviting. There are no gimmicks or over-the-top interpretations of Mexico designed purely for Instagram. Instead, La Taqueria keeps the focus on what matters most: good food, good drinks, and a compact menu built for sharing—a blessing for indecisive diners like me.

As someone who could happily make a meal out of chips and guacamole alone, I started there and was pleasantly surprised. Fresh, incredibly creamy, well-seasoned, and served with both tortilla chips and crisp plantain chips, the guacamole de Mezcalita hit the spot. It reminded me of the way you eat guac at home, reaching for whatever chips you have in the pantry once the tortilla chips run out. And just like homemade guacamole, it disappears before you realise how much you've eaten. Simple, satisfying, and impossible to stop going back to.

Smoked Trout Tartlets

The seafood dishes were just as memorable. The camarones a la diabla arrived with a side of crusty bread and was packed with flavour. Featuring juicy prawns in a sauce that struck the right balance between richness and spice, it was easily one of the standout dishes of the meal. Equally impressive was the tuna aguachile with paletas de limon—bright, citrusy, and incredibly refreshing. It captured the lighter, breezier side of Mexican cooking and made for a stellar appetiser.

Vegetarians won't feel like an afterthought here either. The Burrata Ensalada, layered with chipotle hummus, coriander pesto, walnuts, and truffle oil, strikes a lovely balance between freshness and indulgence. Meanwhile, the warm mushroom and cottage cheese bowl delivers plenty of texture and flavour thanks to tempura-fried mushrooms, habanero sauce, and a generous spread of accompaniments. They're the sort of dishes that make it easy to build an entire meal without ever glancing at the meat section of the menu.

Pork Belly AI pastor taco

For something heartier, the Carnita Taco was a standout. The richness of the pork confit was balanced by fresh pineapple, jalapeño, pickled onion, and avocado purée, creating a combination that felt vibrant rather than heavy. Even if you don't eat meat, there's plenty to get excited about, from Baja Mushroom Tacos packed with fried oyster mushrooms and chipotle mayo to Jackfruit Barbacoa Tacos that lean into smoky, slow-cooked flavours. It's the kind of taco menu that makes ordering just one round feel nearly impossible.

The drinks deserve a mention too. In a city where cocktail menus can sometimes feel overly complicated, La Taqueria's beverages are refreshingly straightforward. Think spicy picantes, indulgent Irish coffee-style cocktails, and a range of summery mocktails that won't leave you feeling like you're missing out if you're cutting back on alcohol. They pair effortlessly with the food and add to the restaurant's relaxed energy.

By the time dessert rolled around, I was convinced I couldn't eat another bite, but the churros quickly proved me wrong. Warm, crisp, stuffed with sweetened milk, and served with dark and white chocolate sauces, they were exactly the kind of dessert you end up sharing reluctantly. Alongside them, there's a rich Matilda Cake for serious chocolate lovers and a classic Tres Leches that keeps things lighter and creamier. If you're planning your order, leave room for dessert—you'll thank yourself later.

What makes La Taqueria particularly appealing is that it doesn't try too hard to reinvent Mexican cuisine. Instead, it focuses on delivering familiar favourites—tacos, aguachiles, fresh seafood, guacamole, and shareable plates—that leave you feeling well-fed, happy, and thoroughly looked after.

La Taqueria feels approachable enough for a casual weeknight dinner while still being special enough for a leisurely lunch that stretches into the evening.

In a neighbourhood packed with ambitious dining destinations, La Taqueria succeeds by keeping things simple. Come for the tacos, stay for the drinks, and don't leave without ordering the guacamole. Some dishes really are worth the hype.
