India Gets its First Sanitary Napkin Vending Machine on a Large Scale

Taking a step in the right direction with regards to female hygiene, India has launched its first ever sanitary napkin vending machine (on a large scale) in Ajmer.

Installed at a local city hospital, the machine would dispense 3 napkins for Rs. 10. 

But that's not all. There are 70 more machines that are being set up near girls' schools, polytechnic colleges, bus stands, railway stations, and even jails, across the western Indian city.

Manufactured by Hindustan Lifecare Limited, a government-run initiative, these machines will come with Sanitary Napkin Incinerators for safe and easy disposal of sanitary pads.

Close to 70% women in India don't have access to menstrual hygiene products. Unable to afford sanitary towels, these women resort to unhygienic alternatives like ash, old rags, leaves or saw dust.

​Ajmer's initiative will ensure that young girls and women get any- time access to sanitary napkins, cutting down the risk of Reproductive Tract Infection (RTI). 

Kudos to these guys but there's still miles to go...
