You've heard of the shag. You've heard of the pixie. Now meet their chaotic-good Gen Z descendant: the shixie. A modern remix of the iconic 70s shag haircut, the shixie takes everything cool about the original – texture, movement, ecetera, ecetera – and cuts it into a cropped, face-framing pixie silhouette that feels current, wearable, and celeb-approved.

Case in point: Gracie Abrams, who recently hard-launched a perfectly mussed, soft-edged shixie over on Instagram. And then there's Beabadoobee, who debuted her very own shaggy-pixie hybrid at the Fashion Awards earlier this week. Combine the two Cosmopolitan UK cover stars' new 'dos, and you've got a big hair moment. Snaps for our trend-setting alumni, please and thank you!

As briefly mentioned, the shixie is built on choppy layers, feathered ends and plenty of crown volume, giving short hair that effortless, lived-in texture, without tipping into full-on bedhead territory. Though that said, unlike the neat precision of a classic pixie, the shixie does lean into imperfection. A little bend here, a little fluff there – so it's about finding that sweet spot.

When it comes to hair texture, the shixie is a great option for all. Because the cut thrives on movement, wavy and curly hair is the prototype; however, with a bit of styling, even poker-straight strands can join the party. Add a lil spritz of texturising spray, and you're good to go! And in terms of hair type, the shixie, again, is versatile. Finer hair receives a cheat-code boost of volume, and thicker strands can benefit from a lot of layering, which removes bulk and weight.
