After stirring us with her commendable performances on the big screen over the years, Kareena Kapoor Khan is all set to enter the OTT space with Sujoy Ghosh's The Devotion of Suspect X. An Indian adaptation of author Higashino Keigo's 2005 bestselling novel, the thriller film will also feature Paatal Lok's Jaideep Ahlawat and Gully Boy's Vijay Varma in pivotal roles.
Higashino's most acclaimed work thus far, the novel follows the life of Yasuko Hanaoka, a divorced, single mother who thinks she has finally escaped her abusive ex-husband Togashi, to only have him show up one day and threaten her to extort money from her. After posing to be a potential danger to both her and her teenage daughter Misato, the situation escalates with Togashi landing up dead on her apartment floor.
It must be noted that this Indian project isn't the first adaptation of the novel. The bestselling book has been adapted numerous times; in Japan as Suspect X (2008), in Korea as Perfect Number (2012), and in China as The Devotion of Suspect X. A Hollywood version, too, is in development. The untitled Netflix original is to be produced by 12th Street Entertainment and Northern Lights Films, in association with Boundscript and Kross Pictures.
"Devotion is probably the best love story I’ve ever read. And, to get a chance to adapt it into a film is such an honour. Plus, I get a chance to work with Kareena, Jaideep, and Vijay—what more can one ask for? During a table read of the script, Kareena can be seen humming to Lata Mangeshkar's iconic song, 'Aa Jane Jaan'. "I can’t wait to begin work on this exciting project. It’s one that has all the right ingredients—a great story, a visionary director, and a super talented cast and crew. I’m really looking forward to working with Sujoy, Jaideep, and Vijay. It’s the beginning of an electrifying journey and I can’t wait for audiences worldwide to see this global bestseller book come to life," she said in a statement.
