How to make sure your hair remain frizz-free this monsoon

The monsoon may bring much-needed respite from the scorching summer heat, but it also brings a plethora of hair woes. The hair's texture is determined by the condition of its cuticles. Well-hydrated and nourished cuticles result in straight hair, while damaged hair absorbs more water, causing it to become frizzy and difficult to manage.

While you can't completely treat frizz, there are certain lifestyle changes and key hair care treatments that can improve your hair's condition and help you achieve a frizz-free monsoon season.

Hydration treatments: Keeping your hair hydrated fortifies it from within, making it less susceptible to external moisture. Deep conditioning treatments, using ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, and coconut oil, can replenish the moisture content in your hair, thus reducing frizz.

Protein treatments: Consider regular protein treatments like keratin which are beneficial during high humidity. Keratin naturally occurs in hair, forms a protective barrier that smoothens the hair, and combats frizz. However, remember to use sulphate-free shampoos post-treatment to preserve the effect.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse: Apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse is another simple and effective way to tame frizz. Its low pH can help close the hair cuticles, making your hair smoother and shinier. Mix two tablespoons of ACV with one cup of water and use it as a final rinse after shampooing.

Hair serums: Hair serums are a quick fix for frizz. Look for serums with ingredients like silicone or argan oil that form a protective layer around the hair strands and lock in moisture.

Maintaining a balanced diet: While these treatments are beneficial, your diet plays a significant role in hair health. A balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals can greatly contribute to healthier, frizz-free hair. Consume foods rich in essential fatty acids, proteins, and vitamins B1, B3, and B6.

The dos and don'ts of hair care during monsoon

Avoid washing your hair too frequently as it can strip away the natural oils. Use a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt to gently pat your hair dry instead of vigorously rubbing it. The scalp can be cleaned as many times as needed and in the case the hair gets wet while washing the scalp, use a conditioner, leave it on for a few minutes and rinse with cold water to reduce frizz.

Instead of heat drying, consider rolling your hair in a towel or twisting it into a bun or braid to minimize frizz. Minimise the use of chemical treatments, as they can dry out the hair.

When applying hair care products, avoid scrunching your hair as it opens the cuticles and leads to more frizz. Apply products in a downward motion to seal the cuticles.

Keep your hair protected from wind and sun exposure by not leaving it open.
