The 10 Most Awkward and Cringe-Worthy Moments at the 2020 Oscars

It's the Oscars, baby! That means all of Hollywood is in one place celebrating the achievements of, well, themselves! With all that talent in one room, though, there are bound to be weird run-ins, awkward conversations, and weird facial reactions that people just can't control on live television. Thankfully, we're here to report on all the above. Here are the most awkward moments at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Giuliana Rancic's interview with Julia Butters.

Giuliana, an adult, asked Julia, a 10-year-old, if she and Leonardo DiCaprio would chat between takes on Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. Julia, a consummate professional, said there was not a lot of chatting. "Not really, we would be professional," Julia said. Okay, girl! Giuliana seemed shook by that answer.

Giuliana's chat with Questlove.

He mentioned an Oscars after after-party, and she jokingly asked if he had a plus-one. Without missing a beat, he responded, "Uh, I'm not even invited. I'm DJing but I'm not even invited." Welp, guess she's not going! Lol.

Diane Warren being salty about her lack of Oscar wins.

Okay, so Diane Warren has been nominated for 11 Oscars and has never won. She talked to Giuliana about it and said she is the only woman who's been nominated that many times but has never won. Giuliana was like, "I'm sure that's not true!" And Diane was basically like, yeah... it's true. Then she talked about how she definitely thought she was going to win the year she was nominated with Lady Gaga. Yikes.

Kristin Dos Santos saying Greta Gerwig was nominated for an award she wasn't.

So this is a confusing one, but basically, Kristin was talking about the best actress nominees, and she mentioned Saoirse Ronan, but then pivoted to talking about Little Women director Greta Gerwig. "There's a lot of talk about female directors being shut out this year and I'm so happy she's in the running." What's weird about that is that Greta Gerwig wasn't nominated for Best Director, but it's possible that Kristin was really saying that she was happy Saoirse was nominated for Best Actress because of Greta's snub? IDK, but either way, it was weird!

Steve Martin mispronouncing Cynthia Erivo's name.

Steve Martin and Chris Rock were giving a little bit of a monologue at the beginning of the show, and Steve mispronounced Cynthia Erivo's last name. It's pretty awk considering Cynthia is the only acting nominee of color tonight.

Diane Keaton dropping the piece of paper with the winner on it.

When Diane and Keanu Reaves were announcing the screenplay award, Diane low-key dropped the piece of paper with the winner's name on it. She recovered like a champ, though.

Eminem's surprise performance.

Not like we're mad about this, but it was a little bit odd when Eminem rose up from below the stage to perform, given that literally no one knew he would be there. The audience was definitely confused, and you could tell. Case in point:

The makeup and hairstyling winners got commercial'ed off the stage.

When the Bombshell makeup and hair artists went up to accept their award, one man spoke, and before either of the women got to take the mic, the lights went dark and ABC cut to a commercial. Rude!!

One itty bitty sentence in Joaquin Phoenix's acceptance speech.

Okay, Joaquin's speech was 10/10 excellent, but he did talk about his vegan values, and mentioned the act of artificially inseminating cows so that we can steal their milk. While he raises incredibly valid points, it was a little jarring to hear the phrase "artificially inseminate a cow" at the Oscars. Just sayin'

When they tried to dim the lights on Parasite.

After Parasite won Best Picture, the whole crew was still on stage when the lights started to dim. The audience was pissed, and people like Charlize Theron literally started motioning for them to turn the lights back up so the cast and crew could continue to make more speeches. We stan!
