If Heated Rivalry season 1 had you hooked on stolen glances, chaotic chemistry and that addictive will-they-won’t-they energy before they finally did, the makers just confirmed at BookCon 2026 that the show is entering its grown-up era. And no, that does not mean it is getting boring. It means it is about to get painfully real.
At the panel featuring creator Jacob Tierney and author Rachel Reid, the makers opened up about what fans can expect from season 2 of Heated Rivalry. The short version is that the fantasy phase is over. Season 2 picks up the emotional mess that comes after you actually choose each other. Think less hiding in hotel rooms and more figuring out how to exist as a couple in the real world, while everything around you is working against it.
The tone shift is very real
Tierney made it clear that the next season moves into “much more serious territory,” and that is not just promo talk. Season 1 thrived on tension and secrecy, but season 2 is about what happens when those secrets start to feel suffocating.
The story now sits with the consequences of love. Shane and Ilya are not just dealing with desire anymore. They are dealing with fear, long-term commitment, and the reality that their careers and relationships might not coexist peacefully.
“A lot of the initial—there’s still lots of flirting and lots of sex—but this kind of danger, this kind of hotel-room-adolescent-sex stuff is largely gone. And so it presents really new challenges,” Tierney said.
From chemistry to communication
Heated Rivalry season 2 adapts The Long Game, which fans already know is where things get complicated. The couple has technically “made it,” but they are still hiding, still negotiating boundaries and still figuring out how to communicate without blowing everything up.
At BookCon, Reid hinted that this phase of their relationship is intentionally messy. Love is not the finish line here; it is the starting point of a much harder journey. Expect arguments, vulnerability, and moments when you are not sure they will actually make it through.
New characters, new emotional chaos
The panel also teased the introduction of characters from Role Model, especially Troy Barrett, who is far from a light addition to the story.
Tierney described Troy as deeply damaged, someone carrying his own baggage and internal conflict. His arc is expected to bring a different tone into the show, expanding the world beyond just Shane and Ilya’s relationship.
“Troy is a really damaged guy. And Troy is quite damaged on the show. I would say we are digging into that even harder. Because that’s what’s interesting,” Tierney quipped.
The stakes are finally public
One of the biggest tensions teased for season 2 is the question of going public. The secrecy that once protected Shane and Ilya starts to feel like a trap, and the idea of coming out brings its own risks.
Careers, public perception and the culture of professional sports all come into play. Season 2 aims to lean into these external pressures in a much bigger way, making the conflict feel more grounded and less like just a fairytale romance.
Quick recap before the chaos begins
Season 1 of Heated Rivalry followed rival hockey players Shane and Ilya, whose intense competition masked a long-running secret relationship. What started as a rivalry slowly turned into something deeper, built in stolen moments and quiet vulnerability.
By the end, they had chosen each other, but without fully resolving how that choice fits into their much-publicised professional lives.
With all the hints dropped by the makers, Heated Rivalry season 2 will no longer be just about the thrill of falling in love. It will be more about what it takes to stay in love when things get difficult. Season 2 is expected to begin filming in summer 2026, with a tentative release window in 2027. The show will air in India on Lionsgate Play.
