How to make your profile on a dating app stand out

While you’re a right swipe away from getting a perfect match, its chances increase manifold if you’ve got the right images and words that do the talking. Since you’re all set to give your heart, it’s time to put your mind to it as well and take some time off to make your profile stand out. It’s all about projecting confidence and who you truly are.

Here’s some dos and don'ts of creating a profile that's worthy of right swipes and likes.

List the things that you love doing (with others)

Dating is all about doing the things you like in the company of someone special as well as being part of new experiences with them. Thus, it is important to let the dating pool know about activities you are always up for and often do, helping them picture what it would be like to hang out with you. To keep them interested and get noticed, avoid mentioning activities you enjoy in solitude or in your 'me time'.

Upload photos where you’re active

A selfie is the most basic image you could put up. Let people know that you have a life. So browse through your photos where you could be hiking, meditating, or traveling, and sit back and watch how many responses you get. It’s not just words that reveal a lot about your personality, images do as well. Also, a smiling face always garners more interest than the other images.

Also remember, as far as photos are concerned, it’s all about the photo that first appears on the profile—it’s always good to have a close-up there. Do include a full-length photo so people get an idea about how you look. Please avoid group photos (I detest them) and photos that you’ve cropped out of a bigger picture at all cost. At the end of the day, your profile should only be about you.

Talk about what you like, rather than what you don’t

You’re out there to attract people so refrain from using foul language or ranting on dating profiles. Instead, talk about the things, people, and the places that you like and love and interest you.

Stay honest and keep things crisp

You want people to like you for who you truly are. So it’s best to not lie about anything—whether its your age, weight, height, and personal habits (to begin with). If you are wondering how much of your personality you want to reveal to the world, remember, nobody wants to read a book on your life, so keep things simple and concise. Your journey to how you became the person that you are today is for a later date (no pun intended).

If you're looking for something serious, it can help to add some descriptors as conversation starters, so people can better determine whether you have something substantial in common. Keep a neutral tone to your descriptions. You neither want to come across as a boring person nor a do you want to seem frivolous.

Avoid incorrect grammar. Period.

State what you’re looking for

Being upfront in the world of dating always helps. It’s good to let people know what you’re looking for. Do you want something short-term or want a fling or a hook up? Are you looking for a serious and committed relationship or just want to make friends? Let your profile explicitly state that as it can be rather disappointing to match with someone and have a lovely conversation, only to realise you are on the app for completely different reasons. And even if you don’t know what you want, it is absolutely okay.

Have a friend go through your profile

It’s good to get an honest opinion from a friend before you finally get to the swiping and matching. They know you better than anyone else and they’ll keep your expectations realistic by letting you know what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change.
