Tracing Yohan Marshall's musical journey from a rock drummer to mainstream maestro

From his humble beginnings as a confident rock drummer to gracing the grandest stages across the country, Yohan Marshall's journey as a musician is nothing short of remarkable. His evolution as an artist spans genres and mediums, from independent hits to mainstream collaborations in music, film, and advertising. Marshall talks to Cosmopolitan India about his creative process, sources of inspiration, and the transformative power of collaboration.

Cosmo: Tell us about your evolution as a musician.

Yohan Marshall: My evolution as a musician has been tremendous—from being a cocky rock drummer to performing at the biggest shows in the country. I have transitioned from releasing independent hits as a singer to touring with mainstream artists, appearing in movies, shows, and lending my voice to songs and ad-films. My journey reflects a commitment to consistent learning, immense contribution, and constant evolution.

C: What is your favourite genre to experiment with?

YM: I have always been passionate about rock, alternative, R&B. Once I started producing, I realised the language of music is so universal that genres don’t even matter. Currently, my favourite genres to work with are modern cinematic pop and R&B.

C: As an artist, what inspires your main character to make music?

YM: Travel, nature, people, stories, and unique perspectives inspire me. My creative process as a songwriter involves observing things, telling stories, and making people think.

C: How do you stay true to yourself and your passion when times get rough?

YM: I have great people around me—a supportive family, caring friends, and a wonderful partner. I am also learning to be kinder to myself during moments of slow progress.

C: You have been on tour with some of the biggest names in music. How has the experience been like?

YM: Each artist or band has their own way of working—some laugh, some drink, and some get quite serious. While touring with an artist or a band, you end up spending a lot of time with them and getting to know each other quite well. I approach each project with passion, respect, and love, bringing my flair to the creative process.

C: What is your go-to song when you’re feeling low?

YM: My current go-to songs are 'Gravity' by John Mayer and 'Ni##as in Paris' by Kanye West and Jay-Z.

C: Tell us a little about your latest release.

YM: My latest releases include two collaboration tracks—'Maan Ja Zara' featuring Riya Duggal and 'Haan Bhool Ja' featuring Lothika. Both songs have been received well, featured in various media outlets and music platforms, including top Spotify playlists. Performing 'Haan Bhool Ja' live with Lothika at NH7 Weekender 2023 was a special moment for me. Look out for my new track 'Jo Tu Mere Pass Hai' which dropped on February 7.

C: What is your take on the power of collaboration?

YM: When I collaborate with someone on the same creative wavelength, crazy things happen, and the end product is delightfully satisfying.
