2022 calls for change—and, if you’ve been on the fence about experimenting with your lewks, now is the time. A messy bun or a fishtail braid just doesn’t cut it anymore; invite refreshing colours and styles to your vibe, and step into the New Year, a new you. Cosmo spoke with Audrey D’Souza from Lakmé Salon on the hair trends that’ll be everywhere in 2022.

Pencils out, beauty girls.

TRENDY CUTS

The Classic Bob

Bob cuts, with or without bangs, will make it big this year, especially for those with straight and wavy hair. It's clearly leading the charge, with the classic chin-length look making a comeback. "Hairstylists are also making a strong case for long bobs that are a tiny bit longer in front. If you have fine hair, this cut will help you achieve a cleaner line," says D’Souza.

Wispy Bangs

Curtain bangs are here to stay—and blunt ones are in vogue; but if your temptation to try a fringe comes with an apprehension that you might go too heavy, you'll welcome the wispy-bangs trend with open arms. This 90s-inspired look, bangs with layers around the face, is the perfect way to create more movement and texture.

Edgy Mullet with Bangs

The mullet, be it straight or wavy, has always been a crowd favourite. Layers add volume and texture, although a sleek style would be pleasing to the eye as well. If you’re looking to make a bold statement this year, this one makes the 'cut'.

TRENDY COLOURS

Reverse Balayage

Balayage—which actually refers to the way a colour is applied, rather than the colour itself—isn’t going anywhere just yet. While a regular balayage is been-there-done-that, let’s try our hand at the reverse balayage this year, shall we? "Instead of having your roots darker than the rest of your hair, go for a root colour that is a shade lighter than your natural colour. You could also try a chocolate caramel balayage; the melting hue creates a delicious colour blend," recommends D’Souza.

Money Piece

Scrounging for a new look, but don't want to go all-out? Consider adding streaks to the front of your hair, referred to as the ‘money piece’. It's a great way to draw attention to your features and freshen up your hair without having to colour your entire mane.

A Splash of Colour

Almost anything works if it's colourful. Don’t worry, you don’t have to go full-on colour right away—unless you want to—because bright highlights and coloured tips are in this season. Pro tip: If you want to achieve the perfect sun-kissed look, use light brown and warm blonde highlights.

TRENDY STYLES

Bouncy Blowouts

Bouncy blowouts are back in style, beauty girls. Styling limp hair with that holistic volume has always been a great way to summon bulkiness and amplify thin strands to make them look fuller.

Loose, Messy Buns

The messy bun trend is not done with just yet. The ultimate trick lies in accessorising your bun the chic way—think scarves, hair barrettes, fresh flowers, headgear.

Retro Waves

"Create effortless retro waves by brushing through larger curls. These soft tendrils of hair compliment every face shape and texture," suggests D’Souza.
