For every pet lover, soon-to-be pet parent, and just about anyone, we cannot emphasise this enough—adopt, don’t shop; there are thousands of our four-legged friends out there who are in need of a home. That said, getting home a new pet shouldn’t be an impulsive decision, no matter how much you love them. Being a pet parent comes with a ton of responsibilities and can be demanding in terms of time, energy and money. Yes, they will bring with them all smiles and love, but are you prepared to reciprocate?

Considering adopting a pet can be overwhelming; hence, we’ve made it simpler for you with these handy tips.

Ask yourself if you are ready to commit

Getting a pet home is never just getting a pet home. Playing with them, feeding them, bathing them, training them, and giving them all the attention and love they seek is like having a full-time job. If your work is high-demanding, time-wise, you might want to consider how much time you will be able to give your pet, and juggle between work and being a pet parent. If you cannot give them the time they deserve, you’re best left at watching videos of them on social media.

Does a pet fit into your budget?

Be prepared to spend on your pet—there are basics like food, toys, training, and vet visits to take care of. You may also need to keep aside some emergency funds for days when they may not be in the pink of their health. Be sure you can take on the responsibility, financially.

Speak to a vet before you adopt a pet

A vet can be an excellent source of information to help you choose a pet that best suits your lifestyle and needs. Also, you may want to find a vet in and around your area, considering you may have to visit them in the future.

Is your home pet friendly and are you willing to make it so?

Before you bring a new pet home, do your research. Check for hazards in your home that may be a hindrance for pets. Think low cabinets, easily accessible countertops, glass bottles, electric cords, curtain rods and so on. Make sure you have a large area to exercise them.

How does your family feel about pets?

Make sure everyone at home is okay with the adoption. You don’t want your new furry friend to feel unwelcomed or unhappy in your home. Discuss the pros and cons with every member of the family.
