‘Plain Jane makeup’ might be the most refreshing beauty trend from the Oscars

We’ve spent years trying to perfect the no-makeup makeup look. Somewhere along the way, we stumbled upon soft glam, clean girl makeup, and barely-there makeup, all great in their own right, but none quite hit the mark. However, the Oscars 2026 red carpet may have just delivered the reset we needed.

Amid a sea of full-glam moments was a noticeable wave of fresh, softly painted faces. Think sheer skin, the faintest flush of pink, and a whole lot of glow. It's simple, it’s plain—it’s plain Jane, and we love it!

At its core, 'plain Jane makeup' is all about restraint. One might even call it safe, but it is far from it. You simply skip heavy contouring, dramatic eyeshadow, and bold lip colour, opting for a makeup look that still looks like skin. The result is polished and romantic. In other words, it’s the kind of makeup that doesn’t compete with the outfit or the moment; it just complements it. And from the looks of it, this subtle makeup trend was the perfect accompaniment to every outfit.

Take Emma Stone, for instance. The actor's sparkling, platinum Louis Vuitton gown, on its own, looks exactly like the kind of glam outfit you'd pair with a bold red lip or glittery eyeshadow on a night out. But Stone's popping peach blush and coral lipstick complement the dress's light tones, making it a perfect look for a day on the red carpet. Heck, her green eyes were all the pop of colour she needed.

Gracie Abrams took a similarly relaxed approach. She chose glowing skin, softly brushed brows, and a neutral lip that looked easy and unfussy to go with her navy sequinned Chanel ensemble. The look felt young and effortless, with the most charming pixie cut that tied it all together perfectly.

Elle Fanning gave us a sort of bridal dream montage in a strapless Givenchy number, with her makeup matching the romantic aesthetic of her outfit. Peachy, blushy, and so simple and minimal, you'd really think she woke up like that. And her vivacious energy only added to the freshness in her look.

Ariana Greenblatt took a similar approach, leaning into soft minimalism to complement her ivory bridal-esque gown. With luminous skin, pink blush, and lightly defined lashes, her look had just enough colour without seeming overpowering.

Charithra Chandran showed that plain Jane makeup pairs beautifully with bold colours too. Her bottle-green Miss Sohee gown was balanced with soft honey-brown tones in her makeup, for a warm, natural finish. With softly bronzed skin, a gentle blush, and subtle eye definition, the result was simple, polished, and perfectly balanced. Very much the Bridgerton diamond!

K-pop singer Ejae is another great example of maximalist meets plain Jane. Her dramatic gold gown already had plenty going on, and was balanced by a clean, understated beauty look. Radiant skin, a light flush of blush, and softly defined eyes—just enough to look polished without competing with the outfit.

The best part? This kind of look is surprisingly easy to recreate. At its heart, plain Jane makeup is less about piling on products and more about using just enough to let your natural features shine through.

Foundation is necessary for a clean base, but keep it light and breathable, think sheer coverage that lets your natural skin texture show through. The goal isn’t to perfect every inch, but to even things out just enough. A soft hint of blush then becomes the star of the show, placed exactly where it’s meant to be: on the apples of your cheeks. Choose rosy or soft pink tones and blend them gently upwards for that natural, just-pinched flush.

The rest of the look should feel effortless. Mascara is optional and should be kept light if used, while false lashes are a definite no; this trend is all about keeping things believable. Sweep a soft wash of pink or neutral eyeshadow across the lids to add a touch of warmth and dimension, and finish with a natural lip tone or a sheer balm. The finished look should feel fresh, romantic, and just polished enough without ever looking overdone.

At the end of the day, plain Jane makeup proves that less really can be more. With glowing skin, soft blush, and barely-there colour, the look feels effortless yet polished. And if the Oscars red carpet is anything to go by, sometimes the most striking beauty looks are the ones that simply let your natural beauty shine.
