John Mayer has been receiving death threats from Taylor Swift fans on Instagram. This harsh turn of events comes after Taylor rereleased her 2012 studio album Red, specifically due to the single All Too Well. Allow us to explain what happened.

The new 10-minute version of her song—which is assumed to be about Taylor's relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010—has received a lot of attention from fans. As a conversation around Taylor's past relationships has been reignited, fans are recalling another one of her turbulent linkups, one with John Mayer.
For those who might not be aware, John and Taylor dated for a few months back in 2009, he was 32 and she was 19. After their short-lived relationship and split, Taylor wrote a song titled Dear John in her 2010 studio album Speak Now. John went on to condemn the song in a later interview, calling it "cheap songwriting." when asked about the song's line "I was too young to be messed with" he said, "I don't want to go into that."
John's past comments resurfaced earlier this year after he spoke against the treatment of women in Hollywood following the release of the Framing Britney Spears documentary. Fan's argued that his own comments about Taylor were demeaning and degrading. And now, with the rerelease of Red fans have taken to roasting Taylor's exes—Jake and John—on social media. However, some have taken it too far, sending the musician harsh messages...and even death threats.
In screenshots that have gone viral on social media, a fan named Alondra sent John several aggressive DMs on Instagram. While celebrities typically ignore these kind of messages, John decided to respond. Here’s what he had to say.

“Hi Alondra, it’s John. I’ve been getting so many messages like these the past couple of days, I decided to choose your message at random to reply to,” he purportedly wrote. “You can feel free to screenshot, share in any way you like if you want.”
According to reports, Alondra followed up by apologizing to John telling him that, “My friend literally dared me to do that. She’s a Taylor fan and so am I. It was a dare. I’m sorry. I did not expect you to see.”

“So it’s a fun thing people are doing without taking into account that I might see it and be affected by it?” John responded, before adding that it was “100 per cent OK.”
Despite John’s history, fans have jumped to his defence from the harmful messages, commenting that no one is deserving of receiving death threats (we firmly concur).
