The One Thing You Should Drink to Combat Jet Lag

While there are many upsides to travelling further afield (see: the culture, the food, the tan!), going on long haul flights also has its downsides. The impact a flight can have on your skin aside, it's the dreaded jet lag that can threaten to ruin both your holiday and make coming home from a trip even worse.

But according to nutritionist Anita Bean, there are certain things you can do to make your jet lag better - including what you eat and drink. Speaking to The Express, the food expert champions cherries as a sure fire way to beat your body clock, thanks to their natural source of melatonin.

"Jet lag occurs when your internal body clock becomes disrupted due to crossing time zones," she explains. "The main symptoms include fatigue, insomnia, digestive problems, appetite changes and concentration and memory problems.

"Eat cherries or drink cherry juice. Cherries are one of the only natural sources of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate our sleep patterns."

Explaining the science behind the solution, Anita added, "Research has found that drinking tart cherry juice twice a day raises the body’s level of sleep-inducing melatonin and can increase sleep time by more than 80 minutes a night.

"The extra melatonin may help your body fight jet lag and regulate its natural sleep cycle when you arrive in your new time zone."

The more you know, huh? Other jet lag remedies that frequent flyers swear by are the Timeshifter app, which helps to resynchronise your body clock with your new time zone through recommendations on when to sleep, have caffeine and be in the dark, as well as setting your clock to your new timezone as soon as you get on the plane.
